ASU Back to School 2023/24

For a number of years we have been selling Retrospec Harper single speed street bikes for student transportation. These one speed road bikes are well suited to our flat terrain and are more affordable and reliable due to the reduced complexity of a one speed bike. They will get you places quickly with less effort at the expense of a bit of comfort. Unlike a cruiser with upright seating, these bikes will have you leaning forwards a bit, and it is that seating position which increases speed and efficiency. It’s a seating position that many folks easily adapt to and come to appreciate for the efficiency and speed. However, it’s not the bike for everyone. We do have some more casual cruisers and city bikes in stock in smaller numbers, and as such they may not always be available immediately. (see the photo below the Harper photo).

* an asterisk indicates all prices are subject to change, but this year’s pricing is the lowest it has been in years!

Retrospec Harper / Harper+ Bikes

The Harper one speed road bicycle is priced at $229* + tax and it is one of the most affordable bikes we sell. Though the Harper sells out towards the end of the year, we do keep our year round model, the nicer Harper Plus, priced at $279*, in stock. It’s the same type of bike as the Harper, just with more modern technology that offers lower maintenance including sealed bearing hubs. Both bikes can be run fixed gear as well. Colors may vary from what is pictured below.

Retrospec Kinney City Bikes

The Kinney Mixte & Kinney pictured below offer the comfort of beach cruisers, but the efficiency of a sportier bike, with 7 or 8 gears. The Kinney models are priced at $329*, again the lowest price on these bikes in years!

Bike Security & Accessories

With the purchase of a bike we recommend a proper lock system, lights (required by law), a water bottle cage and helmet (Arizona does not have a helmet law). Below is a list of useful/necessary/nice to have accessories with price ranges.

  • A quality primary and secondary lock. Bike theft in Tempe and beyond is very high. You will need to secure the three most expensive parts of the bicycle (how-to). That being the frame, rear wheel and front wheel. Most u-locks only lock two of those three pieces, so a secondary lock is necessary. Most commonly an accessory cable or an economy u-lock. Primary: $38 – $80+, secondary: $11 – $20+
  • A water bottle cage to hold a water bottle. You need to drink more water in the desert. $7. You’ll also need a bottle that fits, $8 – $15+.
  • A front and rear light. A front light is required by law, a rear light significantly increases your visibility at night. $17ea- $100+.
  • A floor pump. Tires are more puncture resistant and last longer when inflated once a week. You’ll also go faster with less effort! $38+
  • A basket, or a rack and bags if you’d like to carry things. $35+
  • A helmet, you’re coming to college to put things into your brain, protect your investment!. $70+
  • A roadside flat repair kit so you don’t have to walk with a flat. A spare tube, tool(s), tire levers, patch kit and a small emergency pump. $45+
  • Tube sealant. $5 per wheel. Seals up small punctures from thorns.
  • Higher quality tires. Tires on most bicycles are just basic, standard quality rubber tires with no puncture resistance. A higher quality tire can reduce the frequency of flats. $30+ per tire.
  • Chain lube. $10+. Alternatively we can lubricate your chain for $1. Perform this monthly.
  • Fun, different colored accessories. When you make your bike unique you make it easier to spot after a theft. Items such as grips, saddle, pedals, chain, etc.

We also post random singles and the occasional used bike over on our Instagram page (Instagram app not required!): http://www.instagram.com/bicyclecellar

Take care and stay safe!
